UPSTATE ESCAPE
upstate escape IN GERMANTOWN, NY
Hudson Valley clients renovated an existing craftsman bungalow perched atop a sloping site.
In the design which developed, a curving ribbon of stone runs through the site. This sculptural, curving stone wall wraps around the home and driveway, rising and falling and finally tapering back into the hillside. The walls support the house on the hill above, while also retaining grades along the driveway below. Nestled within the walls, just off the back of the home is an intimate patio space, carefully designed to create a series of tiered seating, gathering and planting spaces.
The stone walls were built by a master stonemason, from a locally quarried stone material which is repeated throughout the property.
The planting design incorporates native Oaks, trees and shrubs into all of the spaces. Screening plantings were used to create privacy in critical areas- with neighbors, along the street and at the lap pool, which is tucked within a native meadow. The first phase of the meadow has been planted down the hill in 2023. Additional phases of planting and screening will take place in Spring and Fall 2024. In time, paths will be mowed through the meadow winding their way down to a wooded stream below.
