GLORIA STEINEM'S GARDEN
GLORIA STEINEM’S GARDEN
As Gloria Steinem began updates and renovations inside her townhouse, she also turned her attention to the shady garden tucked just behind it. What had once been a secluded, somewhat hidden space was about to become a more visible space, a natural extension of her home into the garden.
When Liz and her team began working on the garden, plans were underway for a door to be added off of the back of the house, near the kitchen and cozy breakfast nook. This thoughtful addition would help connect the home to the garden, inviting Gloria and her guests to step outside and enjoy the greenery.
In response, LPLA worked with Gloria, her Foundation and Will Sega, her longtime gardener, to reimagine the outdoor space. They envisioned a serene and lush oasis— designed for both quiet moments and lively gatherings. The plan included ample seating, a variety of beautiful plantings, elegant earth-toned planters, and a stunning bronze sculpture, created by Deborah Bell, as the garden's centerpiece. Flanked by an older Japanese Maple and treasured Cherokee Chief Dogwood tree, the sculpture seems at home in the space.
Special care was taken to incorporate Gloria’s treasures—meaningful gifts and souvenirs collected from a lifetime of travels, into the garden and plantings.
Today, the garden offers a welcoming space for everything from peaceful mornings with a cup of tea to foundation gatherings and is now a true reflection of Gloria’s warmth and spirit. Garden featured in January 2025 issue of Architectural Digest.
